International pharmaceutical companies occupy the top fifteen places on the list of companies with the most patents in Iceland. Nine of fifteen companies with the most registered trademarks are also international pharmaceutical companies. Companies in bio and health technology are also prominent among the Icelandic companies that have the most patents. A total of almost 9,500 patents are registered in Iceland (of which 5,209 in the pharmaceutical category) and more than 60,000 trademarks. There are more than 1,400 design registrations.
